Round hole in a solid-sawn joist
Use a hole-reinforcer product only when the joist size, hole diameter, hole location, and remaining wood meet that product’s criteria.
Floor joist repair selection guide
Start with the joist type and the damaged area. Nolan Joist Repair Straps are our featured solution for qualifying cut, drilled, notched, or otherwise weakened solid-sawn dimensional-lumber floor joists. Additional products below address specific holes, notches, engineered I-joists, cracks, or lost end bearing.

The steel strap transfers tension across the damaged area and back into sound wood. Available strap lengths provide different amounts of reach around the damage and nearby plumbing, electrical, or mechanical lines. Use each product page and the current design report to confirm fit.

Choose by framing and condition
These products remain available for conditions that call for a different configuration. Match the product to the actual member and damage; similar-looking repairs are not automatically interchangeable.
Use a hole-reinforcer product only when the joist size, hole diameter, hole location, and remaining wood meet that product’s criteria.
Choose a notch-repair product by actual joist depth and confirm the notch dimensions and location against the product instructions.
Mending plates are a separate repair approach for qualifying dimensional-lumber joists. Verify that the plate size and published application match the damage.
Engineered I-joists are not solid-sawn lumber. Use a web-specific repair product when the damage is limited to the thin central web and fits its requirements.
Damage to the top or bottom flange requires a flange-specific solution. Do not substitute a solid-sawn-joist strap without applicable engineering.
An end-support bracket addresses qualifying bearing conditions where the joist end no longer has adequate support. It is not a repair for midspan holes or notches.
Joist repair FAQ
Choose from the 24-, 30-, 34-, and 42-inch products by comparing the damage dimensions, required connection into sound wood, nearby utilities, and the specific product guidance. Joist depth alone does not determine strap length.
The Nolan design report addresses qualifying notched and drilled solid-sawn floor joists. The report limits analyzed notch width to 6 inches and requires minimum sound wood above the damage based on joist size and species.
No single product shown here covers both. Nolan Joist Repair Straps are presented for qualifying solid-sawn dimensional-lumber joists. I-joist web and flange damage require the corresponding I-joist products and their instructions.
Provide the joist type, actual depth, span, damage size and location, remaining wood, spacing, nearby utilities, and clear wide and close-up photographs.
No. Product suitability depends on the existing member, damage, loading, and installation access. Conditions outside the published criteria may require project-specific engineering or another repair approach.
