Choosing The Right Structural Solution

How Do I Know Which Product Is Right For My Project?

Start with the condition you need to correct:

What Photos And Measurements Should I Send For Product Guidance?

Send one wide photo showing the surrounding structure, several close-up photos of the condition, and measurements of the framing member, opening, damage, wall movement, or slab as applicable. Include your project location and describe what you are trying to accomplish. Photos should be well lit and include a tape measure when scale is important.

Are Nolan Structural Products Suitable For DIY Installation?

Many products are designed to be practical for experienced DIYers and contractors using common tools. Structural work must still follow the applicable installation instructions, design criteria, and local requirements. If you cannot verify the existing conditions or safely access the work area, consult a qualified contractor or engineer.

Design Reports, Instructions & Code Review

Does Every Product Have A Design Report, Installation Instructions, And A Sizing Or Spacing Table?

No. Resource availability depends on the product. When a design report, installation guide, sizing table, spacing table, or video is available, it is displayed in the resource section near the top of that product page. Cards for unavailable resources are intentionally hidden.

Will A Product Be Accepted By My Building Department?

The local authority having jurisdiction makes the final decision. A published design report applies only when the project falls within its stated assumptions, limitations, member sizes, loads, and installation requirements. Contact your building department before ordering if a permit or engineered documentation may be required.

What If My Project Falls Outside The Published Design Criteria?

A project-specific engineering review or custom design may be required. Send project photos, dimensions, location, and available construction information through our Contact Us page. Custom engineering is separate from the product purchase and should be arranged before installation.

Where Can I Find The Latest Technical Documents?

Use the resource section near the top of the applicable product page. This helps ensure you are reviewing documents associated with that product. Download or print the current documents before installation; do not rely on an old saved link or a document for a different product.

Joist Repair Kits

What Are Joist Repair Kits Designed To Repair?

Nolan Joist Repair Kits reinforce qualifying solid-sawn dimensional-lumber floor joists that have been cut, notched, drilled, or otherwise damaged. The steel strap installs in the configuration shown in the current instructions and transfers force around the weakened area without requiring full joist replacement.

Which Joist Repair Strap Length Do I Need?

Use the current Joist Repair Kit sizing reference table linked near the top of the product page. Selection depends on the joist size, the type and dimensions of the damage, its location, and the available sound wood around it. Strap length alone does not determine suitability.

Can A Standard Joist Repair Strap Be Used On An I-Joist?

Do not assume that it can. I-joists behave differently from solid-sawn lumber and require a repair designed for the damaged component. Use the dedicated I-joist web or flange repair products shown in the Joist Repair Kits & Information collection, or contact us if you are unsure which system applies.

Can I Install The Strap On The Side Or Top Of The Joist?

Install the product only in the configuration covered by its current instructions and design report. Do not move the strap to another face of the joist simply because access is easier. A different installation orientation may require a different product or project-specific engineering.

Do I Need To Remove Plumbing, Wiring, Or Ductwork?

One advantage of a properly selected repair strap is that it may reinforce the joist around existing utilities without removing them. Suitability depends on the damage, fastener locations, required clearances, and safe access. Never drill into or fasten through utilities.

Basement Wall Straps

What Does A Basement Wall Strap Do?

The system provides low-profile steel reinforcement on the interior face of a qualifying concrete-block foundation wall. When properly selected and installed, it is intended to stabilize the wall and prevent additional inward movement. It does not straighten an existing bow or close existing cracks.

Can Basement Wall Straps Be Used On Any Foundation Wall?

No. Confirm the wall material, wall height, backfill height, soil condition, existing inward movement, top and bottom attachment conditions, and strap spacing against the current design report and spacing table. The standard system is intended for qualifying concrete masonry unit (CMU) foundation walls. Do not use it as a general repair for poured concrete, stone, brick, or severely displaced walls without engineering review.

How Much Existing Wall Movement Is Allowed?

The current standard product guidance states that the straps are not recommended where the wall has deflected inward more than 2 inches. Measure the maximum movement and review all published criteria before ordering. Significant movement, active water intrusion, settlement, or damaged masonry may require professional evaluation.

How Far Apart Should Basement Wall Straps Be Installed?

Use the current spacing table for the actual wall height, backfill, and project conditions. Do not choose spacing from a photograph, an old document, or a different project. If your conditions are outside the table, request an engineering review.

Attic Access Bulkhead

Why Is Structural Reinforcement Needed Around Some Attic Openings?

Ceiling joists and truss bottom chords can act as tension members that help resist roof spread and outward wall displacement. Cutting them without an engineered load path can contribute to roof movement, displaced exterior walls, and cracked interior finishes. The Attic Access Bulkhead transfers those forces around the opening.

What Size Opening Is The Standard Attic Access Bulkhead Designed For?

The standard system is designed around a 54-inch by 22.5-inch attic access opening. Verify the current product drawings and installation requirements before laying out or cutting the opening. Custom sizes may be available for non-standard conditions.

When Should The Attic Access Bulkhead Be Installed?

Position, assemble, and fully secure the bulkhead as directed before cutting any ceiling joist or truss bottom chord. The framing must not be cut first. Follow the current installation instructions, including the specified SDS25200 fasteners and permitted cut limits.

Can I Cut Any Part Of A Roof Truss After Installing The Bulkhead?

No. Only the framing members and portions specifically permitted by the product documents may be altered. Do not cut truss webs, top chords, plates, or other components unless the project has been reviewed and approved for that alteration.

Insta-Footing

Why Is Insta-Footing Faster And More Affordable Than A Conventional Poured Footing?

For qualifying applications, Insta-Footing creates an engineered load-transfer solution on an existing concrete slab without the cutting, excavation, forming, mixing, and concrete-curing time associated with a conventional poured footing. That can reduce labor, disruption, material handling, and project downtime.

Can Insta-Footing Be Installed Directly On Dirt Or Earth?

No. The system is intended for installation on a qualifying existing concrete slab. Slab thickness, concrete capacity, condition, anchors, applied load, and other design criteria must be verified using the current product information. Do not install it directly on soil or substitute surface-leveling materials for structural concrete requirements.

How Do I Select The Correct Insta-Footing?

Selection depends on the required post load and the verified slab and installation conditions. Use the current engineering information and product options rather than selecting only by post size. If the required capacity or existing slab is uncertain, obtain a project-specific evaluation before ordering.

Floor Joist & Roof Rafter Strengthening

What Is The Difference Between Joist Repair And Floor Stiffening?

A Joist Repair Kit addresses a localized cut, notch, hole, or damaged area. A Floor Joist Stiffening Strap System is intended to reduce bounce and deflection along qualifying framing. The right solution depends on whether the problem is local damage, overall member stiffness, or both.

Can The Stiffening System Be Used For Roof Rafters?

Nolan Structural Products offers roof-rafter strengthening solutions for qualifying applications, including conditions associated with added rooftop loads. Use the roof-rafter product information and applicable selection table; do not assume that floor-joist criteria apply to a roof.

Will A Stiffening Strap Repair Rot, Insect Damage, Or A Failed Connection?

Not by itself. Deteriorated wood, active moisture, insect damage, failed bearings, settlement, or connection failure must be identified and corrected. A strengthening strap should only be used where the existing framing and connections satisfy the product criteria.
